ReMac Recover Deleted Data From X-Serve

Monday, April 27th, 2009

ReMac has recently recovered deleted student data for a sixth form college in Surrey. The deleted illustrator and photoshop files were deleted in the knowledge that the data was backed up onsite. Unfortunately the recent backup had experienced errors and 30GB of student work was lost.

ReMac received a call from the college on Thursday evening following the events of the day with 1 question in mind, can the data be recovered? In many cases ReMac is able to recover deleted data and reassured the college a successful recovery should be achieved.

ReMac collected the X-Serve the same day free of charge and was delivered to our specialist lab facility the following morning. Upon receipt of the X-Serve we made an identical copy (forensic clone) of the hard disk drives to prevent any changes to the original media. Using custom advanced recovery tools ReMac successful recovered the deleted data the same day and returned the recovered data ready for the students return of Monday morning.

The college representative was relieved to hear that ReMac had recovered 100% of the deleted data using our advanced recovery tools. They were suprised to hear the data was successfully recovered as previous attempts were made using ‘off the shelf recovery tools’ to no avail. ReMac do not recommend using free or cheap data recovery software if you wish to recover valuable data.

The college invested in a backup solution following the recovery to prevent necessity for data recovery in the future. For further information about ReMac’s offsite backup solutions please see our Data Backup page.

ReMac provide expert recovery of deleted data from MacBook, PowerMac/iMac, X-Serve/X-RAID, iPhone, iPod and many other Mac products. If you’ve accidentally deleted data from you Mac, contact us on 0845 224 1592 or use our contact form.

Shipping Instructions

When sending your hard disk drive to ReMac for recovery of data it is important to ensure that the device reaches us in the best possible condition. ReMac Data Recovery recommend only using a secure, trackable courier service.

ReMac can also arrange for a courier on your behalf with collections the very same day throughout the UK. For further information contact us on 0845 224 1592.

In addition to using the right courier service care must also be taken when packaging the device. We recommend the following:

If at all possible, remove the media from the computer. Get expert help if necessary. Send us just the hard drive(s), tape(s), floppy, jaz, zip, optical, flashcard, microdrive etc..

Remove all cables, mountings and brackets

Do not supply power leads or USB/FireWire cables

Use the original shipping materials, if you still have them. If not, they are relatively easy to replicate, see below:

Use a box that is at least twice the size of the media so that the media can be suspended in the middle of the box. We recommend a minimum of two inches of insulation all around for a 1 Kilo drive.

Where available try to put the hard drive in anti-static packaging. Standard kitchen foil can be used if nothing else is available to you.

Wrap the static protected device in plenty of bubble wrap or packaging foam. Tape this material around the device to protect against any knocks or drops in transit.

ReMac do not recommend the use of loose foam packaging, foam flumps/peanuts, newspaper or other loose items as these do not protect a heavy device such as a hard disk drive well.

Use a sealed, corrugated cardboard box for the exterior packaging.

Hard Disk Failure

Hard Disk Failure

Causes of data loss on Mac OS X systems

There are a number of causes of data loss on Macintosh systems, by far the most common cause, as with data loss on all computer hardware is usually failure of the storage media itself. This failure can be caused by any number of problems such as:

Bad Sectors/Media Degradation

This can normally be identified by any one of the following: Files and folders spontaneously disappearing, a slow down in the responsiveness of the system Failure of disk/data utilities to read from the device Inability to mount the volume

Physical Failure

Normally manifests itself as an unusual noise coming from the hard disk drive. This failure would normally be a clicking or ticking noise but can also take the form of a beeping, grinding or whirring noise coming from the area of the hardware where the hard disk is located.

Electronic Failure

Can occur spontaneously or be due to electrical irregularities, such as failed power supplies, static, power surges etc. In any case of failure data recovery stands the best chance if you speak to a skilled data recovery engineer, such as those at Recover My Mac as soon as the failure is noticed. The lab facility at Recover My Mac is a fully controlled static safe environment, our staff include electronic engineers, read more here: (link to lab facility)

Logical problems

Damage to file system components is a very common failure on Macintosh HFS and HFS + file systems, the Volume Wrapper, B-Tree or inode structures can all become corrupt and unreadable. In many cases operating system repair is possible using applications such as the Mac OS X Disk Utility. When these products fail you need a professional data recovery company who specialise in Macintosh systems.

Accidental Deletion

Macintosh File Systems such as MFS, HFS and HFS + are not the most forgiving of file systems for data recovery. Unlike NTFS, FAT, EXT2/3 file systems once a file is deleted all file system entries relating to the file are erased, normally beyond recovery. However, as with other systems the data area is not overwritten immediately, in these cases further usage of the system is not recommended.
